Every year, thousands of people are killed or seriously injured on the roads, and though statistics from police forces collated by the government suggest that there has been a reduction in deaths and injuries in 2012, there are still many casualties every month. A car accident is always a shock to the system, no matter who is to blame. Fortunately, the majority of accidents do not end in death. Many, however, do result in injuries to a driver or passengers, so it is a good idea to be prepared and know what the options are should an accident happen. If an accident occurs, try to move the vehicle away from the road if at all possible in order to reduce the risk of being hit by other traffic. If this is not appropriate, perhaps because police need to take photographs or measurements, the driver and any passengers should be moved out of the vehicle to a safe place. Assess any injuries; if anyone has been severely hurt, contact emergency medical services immediately.
